Starting tomorrow, nearly 2 million Minnesotans will begin flocking to the Minnesota State Fair.  The 12-day extravaganza begins and ends on Labor Day.

The State Fair is filled with music, rides, animals and most importantly– FOOD!  So many vendors come up with different ways to cook foods or get them “on a stick”.  Why should you feel left out if you’re gluten free?  You don’t have to.

One of the most exciting things to happen at the  State Fair for we gluten free folks (since the inception of this list) is that there is a FULL-ON, GLUTEN-FREE HOT DOG WITH A BUN available this year at the fair!   Look for Chicago Dogs located in The Garden at the intersection of Dan Patch and Underwood.  They say you have an option of a Chicago Style or State Fair Dog on an Udi’s hot dog bun.

How about the Gluten Free Risotto Poppers by French Meadow Bakery?  What are they?  Here’s the description on the State Fair website: “Arborio rice balls with black beans, cheese, scallions and spices, hand-rolled and dipped in tapioca flour and egg wash, then dipped in gluten-free crushed corn tortilla chips.”  French Meadow is located on Carnes Ave. between Nelson and Underwood.

Of course neither of these two organizations explain how they keep cross contamination to a minimum (do they change gloves when serving the dogs? or have GF oil when serving the risotto poppers?)  You will have to inquire about those concerns while at the fair.

Northland Celiac Support Group’s works all year compiling this list gluten free state fair foods.   They do a great job on it.   Other options you will find on the list include everything from turkey legs to french fries.  Or for something sweet, fudge, sorbet and frozen custard.

While at the fair supporting gluten free vendors, check out the gluten free baking competition in the Creative Arts Building.  There are 5 categories from which contestants were able to choose and submit their goodies to see if they could win a blue ribbon.  Those categories include Quick bread/muffins, Crackers, pretzels or snacks, Cookies or bars, Cake, and Yeast breads.

Unfortunately, we won’t get to the State Fair this year.  Life is very busy with me race directing Women ROCK a new women’s running race in Minnesota on September 1st.  But I hope everyone else can get out and enjoy these gluten free options at the fair!  If you do, please comment below on which foods you recommend and which you would recommend not spending your money on.
